New Jersey Launches State Specific Water Safety Strategy

In a crucial effort to reduce drowning in the Garden State, especially among young children, On June 17, 2025, New Jersey unveiled its inaugural state-specific water safety strategy during a press conference at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Camden featuring leading experts, advocates, lawmakers, and affected families.

The New Jersey Water Safety Strategy is proudly sponsored by NESPA, and speakers at the press conference included, executive director of the Northeast Spa and Pool Association, Dominick Mondi.

Spearheaded by the New Jersey Swim Safety Alliance (NJSSA) with input from more than 200 stakeholders statewide, the New Jersey Water Safety Strategy (NJ-WSS) aims to curb drowning and aquatic injuries by fostering collaboration among local communities, government agencies, and organizations.

The strategy focuses on 6 critical areas: Data Consolidation, Public Awareness, Drowning Prevention, Lifeguard Training, Sustainable Funding, and Collaboration.

Drownings are on the rise across the U.S., including in New Jersey, where about 65 people drown annually. New Jersey will now have a unified voice for the respectful and safe enjoyment of all bodies of water by its residents and visitors.

New Jersey becomes the third such state to create and launch its own state-specific water safety plan, following California and Hawaii.

As pool and spa professionals, NESPA members play a key role in promoting swimming safety, preventing tragedy, and making water enjoyment safer for everyone.
