Why Every Child A Swimmer for Long Island

  • Drowning kills over 4,000 people a year in the U.S. and is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4.
  • Learning to swim from a qualified instructor reduces the risk of drowning by 88% for these kids
  • A 2022 PHTA survey found that while 81% of adults said their children had access to a swimming pool, only about half intended to enroll their child in swimming lessons.
  • We believe that every child on Long Island should be a swimmer.

The LIPSA Action Plan:

Reach every swim school.

Our goal is to have every qualifying swimming facility apply to participate in this program. Swim schools are issued grant funds to provide these lifesaving lessons.

Reach every parent.

By working with Long Island legislators, schools, youth groups and more, we will ensure that every parent knows where swimming lessons are available -- regardless of their ability to pay.

Raise funds.

ECAS/Step Into Swim already has an impressive roster of national donors. LIPSA is soliciting local donors to fund local swim lessons. Donations are matched by the Bill Kent Family Foundation and Step Into Swim/PHTA, so a $5,000 donation becomes $15,000.
