August 2026 New York GRAC Update

Before diving into this month's update, I wanted to say how great it was to see everyone at the recent NESPA Board Meeting. I always enjoy spending time with the Board and members, catching up with so many familiar faces, and having the opportunity to discuss the issues and opportunities facing the industry. As always, thank you for the warm welcome and your continued support of NESPA's advocacy efforts.

Coming off a three-year code development cycle, I'm pleased to share that we did not identify any significant concerns affecting the industry. This is a testament to the hard work and proactive engagement of NESPA and its members throughout the process. By building relationships and working closely with the New York State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council and other stakeholders, we were able to address potential issues before the code cycle concluded, resulting in a positive outcome for the industry.

The 2026 legislative session wrapped up in early June after being dominated by budget negotiations, as the state budget was finalized well past its statutory deadline. Despite a busy and often unpredictable session, I am happy to report that no adverse legislation impacting the pool and spa industry passed either house of the Legislature.

With the legislative session now behind us, attention in Albany has shifted squarely to the upcoming November General Election. All statewide offices—including Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and Comptroller—as well as all 213 seats in the State Legislature will be on the ballot. Candidates and elected officials are spending the coming months in their districts meeting with constituents, businesses, and community organizations before voters head to the polls this fall.

The Legislature is expected to reconvene in Albany in early January, when lawmakers will begin preparing for the 2027 legislative session.

In the meantime, Statewide Public Affairs will continue working to position NESPA as New York's trusted resource on pool and spa safety, industry standards, education, and advocacy. While legislative activity has paused, we remain engaged with state agencies and regulatory bodies, continuing to monitor developments and advocate on behalf of NESPA and its members.
