Q: Is the equipotential bonding grid around swimming pools a new code requirement in the Northeast, or has it been part of the code since the 2005 adoption?

A: The equipotential bonding grid is a newer code requirement, added in the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) as a change from the 2020 NEC. New York State recently adopted the 2023 NEC, and officials are now enforcing the requirement.

Other states and jurisdictions in the Northeast may also be affected as they adopt the 2023 NEC. The requirement applies to certain pool installations where dry-laid patio or lawn areas extend up to the pool coping.The pool and electrical industries are continuing to study the effectiveness of the bonding grid. NESPA, in partnership with the Florida Swimming Pool Association (FSPA) and the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), is conducting research into the efficacy of bonding wire and the need for the grid requirement.

Because electrical code adoption varies by jurisdiction and adoption cycles, always verify the requirements currently adopted in the local area before beginning a pool project.
